Omicron new variant of COVID-19

What is the Omicron variant?

This variant is given biological name as B.1.1.529 people was unaware about this variant until 24, November, when South African Government reported it to the World Health Organization. It took the organization just two days to elevate its profile and status substantially. World Health Organization (WHO) stated,

" This variant has a large number of mutations, some of which are concerning. Preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection with this variant, as compared to other VOCs "

DR. Angeligue coetzee Research on new variant of corona Omicron

Dr. Angeligue Coetzee the South African doctor who first spotted the new covid-19 variant Omicron says that patients seen so far have had an unusual but extremely mild symptoms, but more time is needed before we know the seriousness of the disease for vulnerable people.
She said "Some people this month with Covid-19 symptoms that did not make immediate sense, they included young people of different backgrounds and ethnicity with intense fatigue and a six year old child with a very high pulse rate. None suffered from a loss of sense of taste or smell.
Dr Coetzee said that total about two dozens of her patients have tested positive for covid-19 with symptoms of the new variant. They were mostly healthy men who turned up "feeling so tired". About half of them are unvaccinated. There was an interesting case of six year old child with a temperature and a very high pulse rate, but after two days he was much better.
Doctor Coetzee make it clear that all her patients were healthy, but she was worried that the new variant could still hit the older people with co-morbidities such as diabetes or hearth disease much harder.
"What we have to worry about now is that when older, unvaccinated people are infected with the new variant, and if they are not vaccinated, we are going to see many people with a severe form of disease." said Dr.Coetzee.
The UK, US, the Europe and Israel all have suspended travel to and from South Africa, and the five surrounding countries: Botswana, Ecwatini, Lesotha ,Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
The western travel ban has provoked anger among South Africans with many claiming that they are being punished for having outstanding research institutions and being transparent about their findings.
